Ladan Nikravan is a fieldworker with New York Folklore. Born in Tehran, Iran, she moved to the Capital Region of New York during the 1980s. During the Iranian Revolution, she made the United States her home after travels to Canada and Italy to continue her education.
In 1979, Iran faced an uprising of within its own government. During the Iranian Revolution, many suffered due to demonstrations of violence. The country of Iran went from a secular monarchy to a theocratic republic.
I interviewed Ladan at the William K. Sanford Library in Loudonville, NY. Ladan retired back in 2020 after 30 years as the Executive Director of Centro Civico, a Latino non-profit organization working to reach Latino communities in providing social and health-based services. Ladan now is part-time fieldworker with New York Folklore after serving as a former member on their board continuing to serve her community particularly involved with folk and traditional arts and culture.
